Matthew 14:13-21: When we eat, we are refreshed. We give our bodies fuel to move on. Jesus can multiply a little bit of food to feed a lot. Have you ever been in the position to feed more than five people with one pound of hamburger? You can either make a bunch of tiny hamburgers-which does not work or you can make meatloaf or some sort of casserole or soup. It all depends on the ingredients you have on hand. Meatloaf, as long as you have an egg, you can make meatloaf. I once made it with a bag of ruffles potato chips; however, leftover mashed potatoes taste better. The potato chips were too salty. I have also found that if you roll a filling into the meatloaf you can stretch it a bit further. That is how Jesus works in our lives. One tiny verse can fill our hearts. I generally prefer a couple of chapters per day, but sometimes circumstances leave little time for reading the Bible. It is generally when I am trying to figure out how to feed more than five people with a pound of hamburger or a couple of cans of tuna. When the world is demanding more of my time, it always seems the more I need refreshed by the word. It is also when I make myself use those precious alone moments to become refreshed. Just like the five loaves and two fishes in this parable, or like the pound of hamburger, a little bit of the Bible can go a long way. It is only when I fail to accept reading less than I would like to read in a day, that my day goes horribly wrong. Just like my body needs daily nourishment, my soul, my sanity, need daily refreshment from the word of the Lord. Ignore either one, and you start to hurt. So what if you have to pull your phone into the restroom where you only have time to read the verse of the day. Do it!!! I know my recent dilemma would have gone much more smoothly if I had forced myself to accept the time limitations and read the verse of the day on my Bible apps whenever I could squeeze a solitude moment. Instead, I used the time to complain to myself. By the end of the unexpected week and a half of guests, I was a wreck. I did read the verse of the day a few times, but when things are trying; I need more refreshment. It works that way, as you get older. Just remember if Jesus can use five loaves and two fishes to feed five thousand. He can use a verse or two to feed you.
When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
“We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
“Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
