Why do you give gifts at Christmas?
Do you struggle to find that perfect gift?
Do you believe it is the spirit of giving that counts?
Has gift giving just become an excuse for big business to make money?
The original Christmas gifts were the perfect gifts, the Wise men traveled 100s of miles to give the baby Jesus three perfect gifts. Their first gift was to honor the Savior. A star was in the sky to announce his birth and they followed the star for about 2 years, just to find him. They worshiped Him, recognizing him as the one true King. (Their first gift)
Next God provided for his son, his family was about to escape to Egypt the gold made that trip easier. Imagine traveling without money to a land where you know absolutely no one.
Myrrh was part of the anointing oil for the priests. (Exodus 30:22-23) It was the primary ingredient. Jesus is the HIGH Priest
Frankincense (Exodus 30:34) Used as part of the incense in the Holy of Holies. Jesus replaces the physical need for a building containing the Holy of Holies. Jesus is the Holy of Holies and lives inside of us. As a result we are Holy.
When you give and receive this Christmas season remember the reason.
We give to honor Christ.
Matthew 2:11: On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. (NIV)
